Polyvagal Theory: The Neuroscience of Safety, Threat, and Shutdown

In the 1990s, neuroscientist Stephen Porges proposed a framework that quietly changed how we understand human behavior. He called it the Polyvagal Theory. At Divergent Sensory Solutions (DSS), it is the foundation of how we think about nervous system state and why environment matters as much as intervention.

The Problem with Two States

The traditional model of the autonomic nervous system described two states: sympathetic activation (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic rest. Porges observed this was incomplete — it could not account for the shutdown response that many people experience under extreme or chronic threat.

Three Hierarchical States

Polyvagal Theory proposes three states regulated by the vagus nerve — the body’s longest cranial nerve and primary communication pathway between brain and body. The ventral vagal state is the state of social engagement: safety, connection, creativity, learning. The sympathetic mobilization state activates under perceived threat, preparing the body to fight or flee. The dorsal vagal state is the evolutionary oldest response: shutdown, freeze, dissociation, collapse. It activates when threat feels inescapable.

Why This Matters for Neurodivergent Nervous Systems

For many neurodivergent individuals, the nervous system may spend more time in sympathetic or dorsal vagal states — not because of actual danger, but because sensory environments are generating threat signals the body cannot filter. A crowded classroom, flickering lighting, unpredictable sound — these can register as genuine threat at the level of the autonomic nervous system, even when no cognitive awareness of danger exists. This is not a behavior problem. It is a nervous system in a state that makes sense given the input it is receiving.

The Clinical Implication

Knowing which state a person is in tells you what kind of support is actually useful. A person in dorsal vagal shutdown does not need more demands or verbal processing. They need gentle, predictable sensory input and co-regulation first. A person in sympathetic activation needs movement and discharge before they can access language and reasoning.
